IT Dynamo – MEDO Magazine March 2013

In 2009, Mashudu Munasi put his name behind a business, Munasi Consulting, which he describes as dynamic and diverse IT Company built on multi-disciplinary research and technological innovations, with the aim of contributing to the business sector development and the quality of the people of South Africa.

“The management of IT in a business is like legal advice, accounting and the likes, which are not inherently a do-it-yourself discipline” Says Mashudu

Our services include service level agreements, onsite support, software and systems development, consulting, designing and implementation of customised maintenance and support solutions, corporate branding and design, web development, hosting and IT solutions tailored to the client’s needs”.

Mashudu grew up in a small village in rural Limpopo in a family of entrepreneurs so his aim was always to go into business for himself. He went on to study at the University of Pretoria, this is where his foray into entrepreneurship began and he started his first business with a fellow student.

The experience gave him a good foundation and knowledge about the ICT sector and he eventually branched out to form Munasi Consulting, which he operated from his flat. “During this time, we met all our clients at their offices or in restaurants because our office was undergoing renovations.” This experience taught him e a lot about the ICT sector and he eventually branched out to form Munasi Consulting, which he operated from his flat. “During this time we met our clients at their offices or in restaurants as our office was undergoing ‘renovations’”.

He also found out that starting out was touch for someone fresh from University, with no corporate experience. “We made more losses due to lack of experience in many arrears and plain old bad business administration”

It was a steep learning curve but after three months he was able to hire his first employee, a high school friend who still works for Munasi Consulting today. The business has grown to the point that it now has 6 full time employees.

“Running my own company provides me with the opportunity for my passion for people and enterprise development to thrive,” he says. “And the hunger to succeed has kept me going to where I can say that my business is what it is today” “I am an entrepreneur that I am through hard work, my ever growing set of business skills and mentorship from a vast number of people, especially from the entrepreneurs in my family”

Mashudu’s biggest huddle came in June last year, when he was involved in an accident that kept him away from business for 4 months. “That was a tough time as Munasi Consulting was not prepared for this as most of the daily operations were handled by me”

“A lot of clients were lost and business came to a standstill because of the accident. However on a positive note I have since made changes that allow me to leave things in the capable hands of a General Manager when I can’t be there.”

“MEDO has given me an invaluable platform through their bootcamp, for example, that has seen me learn so much from my peers. And yet the experience is far from over.” He says. “I am going to realize my dream of growing my business even more, creating more jobs and making a positive contribution to South Africa’s economy.

Final words from Mashudu “Gary Player, renowned SA golf player says ‘The harder I practice, the luckier I get’.”
